As a therapist - I use an integrative approach- ranging from cognitive behaviour therapy to internal family system to psychoanalytical therapy. Growing up because of my introspective parents- self-reflection and curiosity came to me naturally. My mother tells me the story of how I was the mother hen even for my older cousins even when I was 3 years old (I used to console them when they were crying and missing home at nursery) - so I do think empathy is also something that I had at an early age.
